Jean-Francois Revon is an industry-recognized stage and video designer working in opera, theatre, musicals and ballet. Throughout the course of his 25-year career, he has worked on over 300 productions, from the San Francisco Bay Area to NYC. In 1997 he founded “Stage Time,” a design and building scene shop company, where he employed over 30 workers, creating full musical sets every month. Revon has been the Chair of Production Design at the Oakland School for the Arts since 2008.
Great stage design tells the audience about the world they’re entering and supports the director’s ideas regarding mood, conflict, and particular themes. It offers visual stimulation and variety, and it provides a physical space that lends itself to a wide range of staging opportunities. Beside this, excellent stage design simultaneously solves script, blocking and budget problems, to balance cost-effectiveness with originality.
With vast experience working alongside directors both traditional-minded and experimentally inclined, I strive to ensure that the director’s vision comes across in visual language. My design approach evolved with technology over the decades, but my philosophy has remained consistent.
